If you’ve ever googled a geographical area looking for a specific product or service, you know that local business listings pop up near the top of the search results. Google “dentist” followed by the name of your city and state or your ZIP code, and Google presents you with a list of dentists in the vicinity.
If you do business locally, try googling your business in the area you serve. If your company doesn’t appear in the list, click the “Local business results for…” link above the Google Map results to see if your business is listed there. Based on what you discover, you have two possible next steps:
- Add your business
- Improve your listing

Entrepreneur magazine’s 2010 contest
Between now and June 15th, small businesses with “no more than 100 employees and gross sales revenue of at least $3 million in 2009 will qualify for the Entrepreneur of 2010 award. The Emerging Entrepreneur of 2010 is open to companies that have been in business for less than four years with no more than 12 employees and posted at least $350,000 in gross sales revenue for 2009.” A third category, College Entrepreneur of 2010, will award $5,000 in startup capital to the winner. In addition, winners of all three categories will be profiled in an issue of Entrepreneur Magazine.
